She must be very young.
Faolan sighed but kept moving on, expecting her to follow. He didn't have time to deal with that sort of thing if she wasn't going to be open to discussion. He didn't really know what to say to her. He was an adult, an experienced hunter, a dragon rider, and had almost a century on her in life experience. This already felt like he was going to be pulling teeth to keep her from being hunted down.
Because predators always went for groups with weak members. And children were weak in comparison. (Also dragons were not pushovers but Faolan would deal with that when the time came.)
"I can probably guess at this point," Faolan replied finally. "You're very emotional about it."
But that didn't matter. The grass rustled to either side of them. Faolan almost froze, but they were just deer. The deer pushed through the grass and past Faolan and Auxina, snorting softly. The only buck had a full rack of antlers that were the same green color as the grass around them, and each of the deer had long fangs jutting out of their mouths.
"Don't startle them," Faolan warned. "They're curious around humanoids but you don't want to be on the receiving end of their kicks. They'll gut you." He paused. "But if they nuzzle your face, you can pat them."
