RE: Fire and Water - Calliope - 11-23-2019

Miala unwrapped the bundle, discovering quickly that the leathery thing outside was the jacket the man had worn earlier, and sighed in relief when she found her skin fully intact within. She pulled it free, then slipped into the jacket, put her skin between herself and it, and knotted it in the front, keeping herself covered and her skin secure.

Then she hesitated. "There's... really nothing you're demanding for this?" she asked.

Haru nodded slowly, opening his eyes for the first time since she entered the clearing. "I have no desire to trap you." He slowly rose to his feet, the motion calm and smooth. Wind blew through the clearing, tugging at his hair and sending the red mane blowing to one side of him. "You have nothing to fear and are free to leave."

The blade remained on the ground, next to the corpse.

Miala couldn't see Haru's eyes, but she knew the exact moment he looked at her for the first time - her heart pounded, just for a single beat, hard enough that she could feel it in every inch of her body.

No desire to trap me? she thought. Free to leave? Not hardly.

All the same, she backed up another step and nodded slowly.

Haru half-turned, facing into the wind and only half glancing at her. After a second, he vanished in a swirl of leaves. The illusion hid him from sight, and he took the chance to shift forms and hide in the trees. He'd follow her to the edge of the forest to make sure she was gone.

Miala didn't take her eyes off of where she'd last seen Haru until she was behind the trees herself. Once she was, she turned and tried to run again - and was promptly reminded that her feet were very much injured still. She forced herself to slow to a fast walk, picking her way over and around obstacles quite deliberately.

A week and a half later, she picked her way back along the path. Now she was clearly coming intentionally - she'd picked up a pale blue sundress, a pair of sandals that laced up to her knees, and a pack. Inside the pack was her selkie skin (neatly folded and tucked into the bottom), the man's jacket to keep everything else away from her skin, and a good bit of food - mostly fish, but also some underwater greenery.

Haru noticed her arrival almost immediately. The wind carried her scent back to his home. The kitsune had been sitting in the garden behind his home, enjoying the peace and quiet until he realized she was coming. "What now...?" He rose slowly, making sure his mask was on properly. He went back around to the clearing in front of his house, making sure the illusion that hid it was properly settled over it, before he sat down in front to wait for her.

It took Miala a good while to pick her way through to the clearing, but she did eventually get there without injuring herself or losing anything. She sighed with relief when she finally made it, and when she saw Haru, she couldn't quite help but smile at the fact that he was clearly waiting for her.

Haru slowly stood up when she entered the clearing. "You've returned." His tone had no judgement in it. Not yet at least. "I would have thought that you would have fled back to the sea."

There may not have been judgement in his voice, but Miala's smile still slipped just a little. All the same, she pushed the bag up on her shoulder and said, "I did. But it didn't fit quite right."

"The ocean didn't fit right?" Haru tilted his head slightly, not understanding. Didn't selkies love the water more than anything? "Was your skin alright?"

He glanced over at her shoulder, then sighed and gestured for her to sit on the grass in front of him, sitting down himself to wait.
